De mossen van het Heuvingerzand en Hiemstrastate bij Hooghalen, Drenthe
B.O. van Zanten, W.J. de Ruiter & E. de Haas-Lely
2-7

The bryophytes of Heuvingerzand and Hiemstrastate, a nature reserve and an estate situated ca. 8 km south of the city of Assen in the central part of the Province of Drenthe, the Netherlands. The Heuvingerzand is a Nature Reserve of ca. 120 ha dominated by Quercus-Betula forest with some stands of Larix, Picea and Pinus. The forest was planted on an extensive heath in the middle of the 20th century. Small parts of this heath, as well as the existent bogs, were not afforested and still exist today, although the fragments of heath are partly overgrown by grass nowadays. The most interesting finds are fruiting Aulacomnium androgynum, Orthotrichum lyellii, Ulota crispa, U. phyllantha, Cephalozia macrostachya, Lophocolea semiteres (second find of this neophyte in the Province of Drenthe), Lophozia ventricosa and Metzgeria furcata. Hiemstrastate is an estate of 57 ha adjacent to Heuvingerzand and also mainly consisting of a Quercus-Betula forest with locally Fagus, Picea, Pinus, Sambucus, Aucuparia, Corylis and a Rhododendron alley. The oldest part of this forest was planted in 1875 and the other parts ca. 1920 on a part of the same heath as Heuvingerzand. Around the buildings are a garden with granite stones, brick walls and a pond with a border of turfs. The most interesting species are Dicranum fuscescens, D. polysetum, Orthotrichum pumilum, Plagiothecium latebricola, Rhytidiadelphus loreus, Ulota crispa and Calypogeia arguta. On a thatched roof Leptodontium flexifolium was found.

Bryophytes of the Lierop heathland (province Noord-Brabant). The study area is a former peat moor and nowadays consists of wet heathland with pools, forested heathland and agricultural fields. Bryological trips between May 1997 and February 2003 increased the total number of known species from 82 to 122 (in 6 km-squares). Epiphytes, virtually absent in 1997, are now quite common e.g. species of Orthotrichum and Ulota. Orthotrichum acuminatum was found six times. Hylocomium splendens appears to profit from a reduced SO2 deposition as well. The very rare liverwort Cladopodiella francisci was found on a loamy ditch side. A maize field, in one autumn untilled due to extremely wet weather conditons, hosted a large number of pioneer species such as Anthoceros agrestis, Atrichum tenellum, Blasia pusilla, Fossombronia wondraczekii and several Riccia’s.
De epifyten (mossen) van een Brabants populierenbos en de uitbreiding van enkele soorten in Zuidoost-Brabant

Epiphytic mosses in a poplar plantation and the spread of epiphytes in southeast Brabant (province Noord-Brabant). In a neglected poplar plantation, about 30 years old, several unexpected epiphytic mosses were found, including Cynodontium polycarpon s.l., Leptodon smithii and Neckera pumila. This is the third locality of Cynodontium in the Netherlands, all from the province Noord-Brabant. The find of Leptodon is the second in 128 years after its supposed extinction (in 1989 it was found on the island of Texel). Neckera pumila is a threatened species from old-growth beech forests in the centre of the Netherlands. Its establishment in a poplar plantation is promising. The sensational spread of several other epiphytes in a 1000 km2 round Eindhoven is discussed and illustrated. In this region, Cryphaea heteromalla was first discovered in 1993 and now occurs in 67 km-squares (kms). Similar trends were observed for Orthotrichum obtusifolium (1983; 9 kms), O. stramineum (12 kms), O. tenellum (29 kms, mainly from from willow and poplar), O. pulchellum shows (1991; 44 kms with a preference for willow), O. striatum (128 kms), Pylaisia polyantha and Syntrichia papillosa (1997; 12 and 85 kms, respectively), Zygodon conoideus (1990; 24 kms), Ulota bruchii (1983; more than 400 kms), U. crispa (1988; more than 200 kms), Ulota phyllantha (1991; 32 kms on willow and elder), Radula complanata (64 kms on willow, poplar and elder) and Metzgeria furcata (67 kms).
De Maleboskorst (Lecanactis abietina), Grote runenkorst (Phaeographis inunsta) en beheersmaatregelen
J.L. Spier & M. Vervoort
26-26

Lecanactis abietina, Phaeographis inusta and management measures. The authors report management measures in the Speulderbosch (province of Gelderland) to achieve a more open forest structure in and around a former loam-pit. As a consequence well-known populations of the rare Lecanactis abietina en Phaeographis inusta on two oaks declined due to strongly increased insolation.
De mossen van de Groninger waddeneilanden. 2. Rottumeroog, Vuurtorenduin en Zuiderduin

The mosses of the Wadden Sea islands Rottumeroog, Vuurtorenduin and Zuiderduin (part 2). This is the second paper on the bryophyte flora of the West Frisian barrier islands Rottumerplaat, Rottumeroog, Vuurtorenduin and Zuiderduin. The first paper (Kruijer et al., 2000) gives an overview of the recent geologic history of the islands and presents the findings of the bryophyte inventories in 1999. This follow up includes additional records of bryophytes from Rottumeroog collected in 1994, supplements the 1999 inventory of Rottumeroog and Zuiderduin, and presents the findings of the 2001 inventory of these islands and Vuurtorenduin; the bryoflora of Vuurtorenduin was previously unknown. The 2001 inventory results in a list of 36 bryophyte species on Rottumeroog, 6 species on Vuurtorenduin, and 5 species on Zuiderduin. We have found no significant changes in the total number of bryophyte species on Rottumeroog since 1973, despite the occurrence of dramatic events in this period. The bryologically most interesting site on Rottumeroog (‘tuin van Toxopeus’) has disappeared by floods in 1998-1999 together with, amongst others, the rare species Moerckia hibernica en Bryum calophyllum. Interesting ‘new’ species are, amongst others, Eurhynchium speciosum, Hylocomium splendens, Orthotrichum affine, O. diaphanum, Tortula truncata, Cephalozia bicuspidata, and Cephaloziella divaricata. These species were only found in the proximity of the ‘tuin van Toxopeus’ and are under threat to be swallowed by the sea. Dicranum scoparium and Syntrichia ruralis var. ruralis are ‘new’ species for Rottumeroog which have not been found again in 2001: the growing site of Dicranum scoparium has been covered by sand, the growing site of S. ruralis var. ruralis (roof of a building) has been destroyed.
De korstmossen van het najaarsweekend 2003 in oostelijk Noord-Brabant

40-43

Lichens of the autumn meeting 2003 in eastern Noord-Brabant The lichenological meeting in autumn 2003 mainly visited a lichen-poor region in eastern Noord-Brabant. The rare Cladonia cariosa and Acarospora anomala were found near disused railroad tracks. The richest locations in the area are churches. An ancient church tower made from volcanic tufa in Neerlangel was found to be nearly completely covered with Lecanora pannonica.
